Rocket Boosters

Loud, fast, powerful …

Rockets are really exciting especially when you start adding black powder motors, igniting and launching them! But … rocket science is not always easy and we challenge you to learn the rules of flying rockets.

Could you build your own rocket from a kit and launch it on a small motor?

Could you build a rocket from scratch, add a fun paint job and launch it on a bigger B motor?

How about launching a rocket containing a raw hen’s egg without the egg breaking?

Get on the right trajectory!

Earn the rocket booster badges!

How to earn your rocket boosters badges

Rocket Boosters - Pilot Badge

To earn your Pilot badge you will need to build and launch your own rocket, this can be from a kit or from scratch.

1. Build a model rocket to hold a single motor or to launch using air or water.

2. Successfully launch and recover your rocket. We highly recommend doing this at a club.

3. Log your launch including the name you gave your rocket, the motor you used or launch system, estimated altitude, recovery system (e.g. parachute or streamer), a comment about how it performed and a comment on how it could be improved. Download a log form here or request a log book to record all your future rocket launches.

Rocket Boosters - Aero Badge

To earn your Aero badge you will need to fly your rockets on different motors OR using different recovery systems,  this can be done by building one or more rockets from a kits or from scratch.

1. Build a rocket from a kit or from scratch.

2. Launch your rocket or rockets on different motors e.g an A motor for one launch and a B motor for a second launch OR use the same rocket with the same motor type but using a different recovery system (e.g. parachute and streamer).

3. Log your launches using our log sheet.

Rocket Boosters - Astro Badge

To earn your Astro badge you will be taking your rocketry skills to the next level! You will need to demonstrate ONE of the following new skills.

Choose ONE from the following:

1. Successfully build and launch a rocket with a cluster of three motors. This can be from a kit or built from scratch.

2. Build a payload rocket from a kit or from scratch and launch with a raw hen’s egg inside. You can fly the rocket on your choice of motor, air or water. The rocket must land without the egg breaking.

3. Fly a rocket of your choice with electronics fitted. This could be an altimeter to measure how high your rocket reaches, a go pro to video the flight, a GPS to track the rocket‘s location or a sensor to measure something else.
